FCS Course Descriptions
Comprehensive Home Economic Elective (9, 10) Prerequisite: None 1 Credit/Semester
Comprehensive Home Economics is a semester length introductory course in home economics open to
students in the 9th and 10th grade. This course is designed with the purpose of introducing the major
aspects of family life and personal care. The student will study and practice basic skills in textiles and
clothing, foods and nutrition, relationship basics, and home management.
Foods I Elective (10, 11, 12) Prerequisite: None 1 Credit/Semester
This is a semester course offered to sophomore, junior, and senior students. This course covers the
nutritional needs of individuals, kitchen management, principles of food preparation, meal planning,
planning on a limited budget, purchasing and storage of food products. Emphasis is placed upon
planning and preparing meals that are nutritious.
Foods II Elective (10,11,12) Prerequisite: Foods I 1 Credit/Semester
This class is a continuation of foods and nutrition I. Advanced food preparation techniques will be taught.
Special areas to be covered are as follows: pastries, foreign foods, dieting, and careers in foods.
Students will participate in lab once a week.
Textile Design Elective (10, 11, 12) Prerequisite: None 1 Credit/Semester
This class is open to sophomore, junior and senior students. Students will study textile construction and
use. Emphasis is placed on the principles of design. Projects will be tailored to students sewing ability.
Housing and Home Management Elective (10, 11, 12) Prerequisite: None 1 Credit/Semester
This is a semester course open to sophomore, junior, and senior students. The course is
designed to help the student investigate the legal, financial, and personal aspects involved in renting,
buying, building, or remodeling a home. Attention will be given to decorative schemes, furniture
selection, large and small equipment selection and managing and maintaining a home.
Child Development Elective (10, 11, 12) Prerequisite: None 1 Credit/Semester
This is a semester course open to sophomore, junior, and senior students. The course is designed to
give a better understanding of children and their stages of development. Emphasis will be given to
parenting and responsibilities involved. Students will get a “hands on” experience working with children.
Child Development Practicum Elective (12) Prerequisite: Child Development 1 Credit/Semester
This class will provide any senior student who is considering a child-oriented career, practical experience
on a daily basis in an elementary or middle school setting.
Family Living Elective (10, 11, 12) Prerequisite: None 1 Credit/SemesterThis is a semester course open to juniors and seniors interested in the individual family. The course is
designed to help individuals gain a better understanding of their roles as family members now and in the
future. Time is devoted to values clarification and knowing yourself, dating, engagement, marriage and
married life.
